At one time you could say that Salem, Indiana was a nice and quiet community of some 5,000 people at one point and now about 6,500 people in 2020. However, its actually changed for the worse over the years and the quality of the people of Salem, Indiana has went downhill quite rapidly along the basic common sense that obviously is ceasing to exist in Washington County and Salem,
Salem, Indiana might as well be the permanent home of some sort of show akin to the Jerry Springer show judging on the behavior of much of the towns population and that of the local county area around it as well as adjacent counties. It might as well be a Jerry Springer month worth of episodes based on the yokel, hilljack mentality that exists in Washington County. Stupidity that comes out of the mouth of most of the people or least around half of the local population of the 47167, 47170, 47165, 47125 and 47108 zip codes among others.
People that are clueless to how the world works outside of Salem, People that have no grasp of basic social skills that would be considered pariahs in any other place where people with common sense, Midwestern values and basic decency inhabit the population of those places. Common sense doesn't exist in Washington County, Indiana. Because Washington County, Indiana has been taken over by the rankest type of people being that of those of the trailer trash mentality. Some of them actually live in houses and apartments but they still exhibit the lowest common denominator when it comes to common sense, basic decency, values, morals and not acting like a bunch of hilljacks from some backwoods part of America. It's like the Southern mentality yet twisted into their own Northern state white trash fantasy where the people make the town and local community look bad.
I didn't used to think that way but the more I have seen over the last 30 years I've seen Salem degenerate into something that ought to be flushed down the Salem City sewer system into the treatment plant and then sent down the Blue River. However, no matter how much you try to polish a turd it still ends up being a turd and the City of Salem along with Washington County would definitely qualify as being a turd of the highest stink and shitty qualities.
You could go back to the 1980s and early to mid 1990s and Salem was actually a decent place to raise a family and exist but now its been turned on its head to be just like every other little white trash community that would find in an asshole state like Kentucky or West Virginia or Arkansas. Because the people of Washington County are largely becoming trash types of people with no common sense, shitty values, laziness, corrupt in nature and of the lowest mentality and lowest common denominator.
People that basically make the community look bad with their stupidities coming out of their ill educated mouth because they have never been anywhere else other than Salem so they have no real idea of where the live and how they live in comparison to past generations or even people in other cities and counties in Indiana or other states. Its as if they've stepped into a time where being dirtball is a common virtue. That could be said as well about a lot of the people in the business community of Salem, Indiana as well as the rest of the population.
I know the hilljacks won't like what I have to say but that's perfectly fine because its increasingly being shown to be the truth while the community rots out from the inside. Its quite sad too because I can trace my genealogy back to the founding fathers of Salem, Indiana and they would be aghast at the white trash behavior and stupidity that exists among the current generation of deadbeats and losers that have flocked to this community along with people that have lived here all their lives. Quite shameful that this rot of white trash stench has been allowed to permeate the town of Salem over the past 25 years or so to make it a not very desirable place to live. Maybe that's why virtually all of my graduating class from the local school hauled ass out of town never to return except for the funerals of their parents and or grandparents that still live in Salem and pass away.
After the funeral and seeing the degradation of the town and community they see what a dump it is becoming and how it looks like a run down shithole that you would find in some parts of inner city America. The center of the town especially Water Street and South Main Street looks like a toilet these days. Not to mention the formation of homeless camps in the area that used to didn't exist because people looked out for their neighbors and their own families. Now you have rampant homelessness, drug abuse through the roof along with shady law enforcement and lawyers that are crooks to the core. There's some good cops and lawyers in Salem but there is a cabal of them that are crooks and criminals to the highest degree and scum of the lowest levels that one could find. All the while the town of Salem do gooders are busy talking about what a great community it is but most of them have never lived anywhere else. Its simply not that special when you can find better things to do and better amenities in other cities nearby maybe an hour away or so either going to Clarksville, New Albany, Louisville or heading north to Bloomington, Columbus, Bedford, Indianapolis or elsewhere.
That's the real problem with Salem, Indiana that the local hillbillies have never been anywhere else in many cases and never lived anywhere else except in the little box in their minds that Salem exists in. Seriously, most of the population of Washington County and Salem consists of rubes, hayseeds and small minded morons incapable of doing much else than being a pimple on the ass of America.

Salemites And Facebook
One of the easiest ways that you can see how people in Salem, Indiana act and react is through Facebook which is popular everywhere but its even more popular with some of the myriad groups of people in Salem, Indiana that post their stupidities on the minute, hour, daily, weekly, etc. Salem is like a skidmark on the underpants of society that needs to be flushed and washed. The interesting thing is that most of the people on these sites are uneducated fools, rubes, hayseeds and various Grade A idiots of the smallest mentalities that exist in Salem, Indiana.
It's as if people in Salem, Indiana haven't really lived much of anywhere else other than their idyllic little trailer trash mentality town where being a moron is valued and people who intelligent and educated are frowned up as liberals or some other political bent. Even if those people are actually conservative in their viewpoints they are still derided by the local neanderthals as being liberal. Because being liberal means in many cases you actually have somewhat of an open mind to the realities of the world, other cultures, other societies, differing viewpoints. In Salem, Indiana these days there is only one viewpoint allowed without criticism and that is to be a mouth breathing Trump supporter or some other mentally ill moron incapable of intelligent and reasoned thinking other than just following orders or what the rest of the trailer park cult in Salem, Indiana thinks how the the world is run.
As if most of them would know because most of these 80 IQ illiterates that can barely read, write and spell judging on their posts on Facebook and other sites are often clueless about the world around them. Clueless about science, clueless about government, clueless about government policies, finance, economics, business development or much of anything else. That explains a lot of why Salem, Indiana is very much chock full of idiots and hillbillies that act just like they did when I lived in Kentucky for many years.
They often clueless to the world around them and the things that really make the world work and people earning a living, improving their standard of living and quality of life along with getting an education which is frowned up on in Salem, Indiana. The local school systems in Washington County, Indiana along with Salem Community Schools, East Washington Schools and West Washington Schools deviate to the lowest common denominator of people. The lowest of the low where education is optional rather than required by the society. That is why Salem, Indiana has been going severely backward for at least two generations and the people there show it in their backwoods mentality, hatred of anything intellectual and intelligent and hatred of those who actually accomplished something educationally. Maybe its always been that way to some extent but the local yokels of Salem now despise anything that actually challenges their limited worldview just as long as they can keep up the appearances of being prosperous.
Being intelligent and reasoned is something severely lacking in Washington County, Indiana and the Salem area due to the fact that it possesses schools which most years rank at the C and D level as determined by the Indiana Department of Education and the people of Salem are in most senses no better than illiterate backwoods hilljacks one would find descending from the hillbillies of Eastern Kentucky, West Virginia or anywhere else in Appalachia.
That's the Salem mentality for you though kind of like that movie Dumb and Dumber.
